Install the session as described below on a WINDOWS PC (128MB of RAM or more recommended) which is connected to the Internet:

In order to install this lesson, you will need to create a new directory on your hard drive, download a self extracting, compressed file into this directory, and then run this file in order to extract the image and program files.  The particular drive or directory name does not matter-we have included some suggested names in our examples.  You may include multiple directories under a top directory called "visit" if you wish.

To get and install the VISITview lesson files:

1. Create a directory on your computer to hold this lesson.

For example, open a MS-DOS Command Prompt window and type:

         cd \

         mkdir visit

         cd visit

         mkdir model_precip

         cd model_precip

You can also create this new directory using the

         Windows Explorer or My Computer.

2. Get the self-extracting EXE file (it is about 18 MB in size) by aiming your Web

    browser to:

ftp://ftp.werh.noaa.gov/share/rah/visit/model.precip.mech.20061103.exe  or   http://www2.ncsu.edu/eos/service/pams/meas/sco/research/nws/visit/model.precip.mech.20061103.exe

Note:  If you are having download problems, you may try using other software

download tools as an alternative to using a browser:

3. Be sure to save this model.precip.mech.20061103.exe file into the same directory that you created in step 1.

 4. To extract all the image and program files, just run the model.precip.mech.20061103.exe file by either:

opening My Computer or the Windows Explorer and clicking on the filename

    model.precip.mech.20061103.exe in the \visit\ model_precip directory  or

opening a Command Prompt window, typing cd \visit\ model_precip  and then typing

   model.precip.mech.20061103.exe

    This completes the installation.

 5. To test the installation:

1.      open the "Display" Control Panel and make sure your Setting for the Desktop Area

      is 800 x 600 or greater.

      2. click on the visitlocal filename from My Computer or Windows Explorer.

Or, you could open a DOS Command Prompt window, and type:

          cd \visit\model_precip

          visitlocal

      3. A login window and "ViewClient" window should appear, with a large red

triangular cursor.  Enter your station ID for the login and click on submit. To

          review the slides, click the

          next button.

      4. If you get an "out-of-environment space" error, please see question 7 in

          the VISIT FAQ at

          http://www.cira.colostate.edu/ramm/visit/visitfaq.html

      5. You can also run the session locally by running the "visitlocal.bat"  (located in the

same directory). This will allow you to examine the lesson slides and test the

animations, without the presence of an Instructor or an external VISIT server

          connection.

      6. On the day of the lesson, we will use the "visit.bat" file to connect to an

external VISIT server, and an Instructor will lead the presentation.

      7. Be sure to quit all other active applications, and disable any screen savers that are

running BEFORE the teletraining session starts. During the teletraining session

remember to have your conference call phone on  MUTE (not HOLD -- HOLD may

force the other offices to listen to your local NWR messages) unless speaking.

In the Command Prompt window where you entered the visit command, you will see various communications messages appearing; for the most part, you may ignore these. However, if a “Communications problem - restart" message appears (and lesson pages are not advancing correctly), you will need to Quit the ViewClient application (by clicking on the "X" icon in the upper right corner), and restart the ViewClient application by entering the "visit" command in the Command Prompt window.
