The MEAS GSA is pleased to announce the 2nd Annual Graduate Student Symposium to be held on August 13, 2012. This event provides graduate students the opportunity to showcase their research to the department and greater university community. All MEAS graduate students are encouraged to participate!

The Sixth Annual MEAS Porktoberfest will be on October 29th.
Porktoberfest is the department's annual pig roast - 'git' ready for some fun. There will be plenty of food (vegetarians welcome), drinks, and departmental camaraderie! Come out to play cornhole or just to enjoy some banana pudding with your buddies.

What to bring: Yourself and your ticket (you might also be wearing a Halloween costume)
MEAS Students can attend for free, just be sure to pick up your ticket in advance (by October 26th). Tickets can be collected in Jordan 4133, 4147, or 5146. Tickets for students will be $5 after October 26th and can be purchased on the day of the event. Faculty and guests can purchase tickets for $5 in advance ($10 after October 26th and on the day of the event). Kids eat free!
Tickets will also be available in the Jordan lobby the week before the event.

The GSA held its first meeting of the 2011-2012 year. Among the items on the agenda was to vote to additions to the MEAS GSA constitution including new appointments to various MEAS committees that have been formed recently.
As this was the first meeting, and as required by the Constitution, the MEAS GSA held elections. The following individuals were voted unanimously into their respective positions... Robert Dunn (President), Walt Gurley (Vice President), Margaret Frey (Secretary), Matt Wilbanks (Treasurer), Adeline Brym (UGSA Rep), Brett Gantt (Alternate UGSA Rep). Congradulations to the new eBoard!

The schedule for the presentations to be given at the 1st Annual Graduate Student Symposium (GSS) is now available at the symposium webpage.
The MEAS GSA is excited to announce the 1st Annual Graduate Student Symposium to be held on August 15, 2011. This day long event is an opportunity for graduate students to present and share their research with peers and colleagues. The GSA will be inviting researchers from other departments and universities, governmental agencies, and local industry. If you have never given a talk, this will be a great way to advance your professional development. We encourage you to check out the website for more information and can't wait to see what our fellow graduate students have been up to!

Thursday we will have a brief MEAS GSA Meeting from 1:30p-2p with pizza and drinks preceding the meeting (around 1pm) in Jordan 1132. This meeting will confirm the new officers to their positions within the MEAS GSA, as well as include a brief discussion of Porktoberfest and anything else that may come up. All are encouraged to attend this brief meeting for the free pizza and drinks! If you are interested in being nominated to any positions within the GSA Executive Board, please let the eBoard know ASAP. Positions include: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, UGSA Rep and UGSA Alternate.
The Fifth Annual MEAS Porktoberfest is scheduled to be held on 16 October 2010.
Porktoberfest is the department's yearly pig-pickin', organized and executed by your Graduate Student Association. There will be tons of fantastic food (pig and vegetarian options), drinks (beer, wine and non-alcoholic options), games and great company! New this year will be a cornhole tournament, raffles and door prizes! All are welcome so get a ticket for your family, a friend, or anyone else who likes fun, food and drinks! You can come by for an hour or stay well into the night!

Advance Student and Students' Guests tickets can be purchased for $10, kids under 12 are welcome for $5. Tickets for Faculty/Staff and their Guests are $15. Tickets for everyone will be $15 the day of the event, so be sure to purchase yours in the next couple weeks. Tickets can be purchased in Jordan 4133, 4147 or at MEAS GSA functions (tailgates and happy hours).
We are still in need of volunteers to help out with the event, so if you are willing to lend a hand please send an email.

We will be holding our first general meeting of the new semester on Thursday, 16-September at 12pm in Jordan 1132, before our tailgate at Carter-Finley. Among things to be discussed will be the election of this year's MEAS GSA officers, Porktoberfest '10, new MEAS GSA t-shirts, last year's budget, and anything else that may come up. Feel free to bring your lunch and please stop by!
The election of officers will take place with nominations being cast from the floor. As per our constitution, all positions are available: President, Vice President, Secretary, Treasurer, USGA Representative and Alternate. If you are interested in any of these positions and would like to know what the duties include, please send me an email. In the interest of encouraging new direction for our GSA, I will not be running for GSA President again this year. Last year we implemented a change into our GSA constitution which allows voting by Proxy. As such, if you are unable to attend the meeting but are interested in being nominated and/or casting a vote, you may have another member of the GSA speak on your behalf. Please see Article V Section 5-B of our MEAS GSA Constitution for more info.
Your GSA has planned a bunch of great events to help you ease into the fall semester! We hope you can come out to some or all of what we have going on, to meet and welcome the new grad students or, if you have holed yourself up in your office until now, to meet the people who have been working down the hall.
Be sure not to miss the Friday night cookout August 20 (food courtesy of the GSA, cheap beer from the keg)! Additional information about this party will be available soon!

Happy Hour/Bowling
Friday's Happy Hour will be at the Alley on Hillsborough starting at 5:30p. I reserved a few lanes for bowling and there are cheap drink specials, bowling is $2.50/game and shoe rental is $3. If you're interested in going, please RSVP by emailing Joe so he can ensure we have a good number of lanes on which to play. Try to get there at 5:30p so that we don't risk losing any lanes.

Please join the UGSA at Pullen Park for an end of the semester get together! We will be providing a picnic for all graduate students at NC State. Take a break from studying and writing papers and enjoy an afternoon in the park. Family and friends are welcome to attend this event. We will be meeting at Shelter #4, located up from the train and playground area, near upper parking lot. Due to construction in the park, parking is limited but the park is easily accessible from campus. Food will be provided between 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m.

The constitution was amended to include proxy voting by members for all future meetings. Please see the constitution (specifically, Article V, Section 5, Part B) for information regarding this change.
This was the last general meeting for the semester. The next scheduled meeting will be held on Friday, 22 January 2010 at 12p in Jordan 1132. Some food and drinks will be provided, be sure to stop by!
Your GSA is excited to announce the 2010 MEAS Photo Contest! We're hoping to gather 13 photos for use in designing 2010 MEAS calendars to be distributed at modest cost to people interested in a unique and personalized gift item this holiday season. So submit your MEAS-related photos, whether it be a spectacular landscape or wildlife shot taken during your field season, a beautiful study location, an amazing microscopic picture, or any other aspect of your work. We're asking you to refrain from pictures of individuals as there is no possible way we could include the 100+ members of the department.
The deadline for submission is Sunday November 29th. After the winning pictures have been chosen by a panel of students, winners will be notified and the pictures posted on our website.
The calendars are expected to go on sale 2 December and distributed shortly thereafter, before the holiday season. The price of the calendars will be determined once we have put together the photos (we're anticipating in the $10-20 range). Please stay tuned to the website for more information. Your GSA VP, Ashlee Lillis, put together a brief survey for you to fill out. At the September General meeting the GSA membership asked for a survey to be taken to clearly outline our goals in the coming year. This task was delegated to Ashlee in the October eBoard meeting. Your input into this survey is critical for your GSA to understand what we should prioritize.
It is very quick and should take less than 3 minutes of your time! Please fill it out by Friday afternoon, it will be used in the Friday general meeting in order to prioritize and outline our goals for the next year. Thanks!
This year's annual Porktoberfest was a huge success! Many thanks go out to Kevin Hill and several volunteers that contributed their time by cooking the food, providing supplies, lugging the refreshments, or with setup and cleanup. Welcome to the new GSA website. In an effort to maximize departmental cohesiveness, the GSA was commissioned with providing a new and improved webpage.
The new webpage features a calendar of upcoming events, a message board for GSA members to exchange ideas, and various links to other important webpages. This is a work-in-progress and several sections of the webpage are forthcoming, so please check back often! Likewise, if you have any ideas on how the GSA website could serve you better, always feel free to suggest them to your eBoard!
Please register to the Forum, future notices regarding MEAS Events (Happy Hours, Tailgates, etc.) will be discussed there in an effort to minimize email congestion. Events will also be posted to the Calendar when scheduled.
