December 15, 2006 The Air Quality Forecasting Lab has two post-doctoral positions open. The first is performing Air Quality-Climate Modeling. The second deals with Atmospheric Chemistry Modeling. For more information, please see http://www.meas.ncsu.edu/aqforecasting/post_docs.html.
November 28, 2006 Kristen James submitted an abstract which was accepted for presenation at the 100th Annual Air and Waste Management Associations Conference during June 26-29, 2007 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The title of her abstract is "Nitrogen Emissions from Agricultural Sources."
November, 27, 2006 Dr. Prakash Bhave from the U.S. EPA visited N.C. State. Dr. Bhave gave a seminar titled, "Improving Numerical Models of Fine Particulate Matter." The seminar was hosted by Dr. Jerry Davis.
October 23, 2006 Dr. William R. Stockwell from Howard University visited N.C. State and the Air Quality Forecasting Lab, as well as the EPA. Dr. Stockwell gave a seminar titled, "Measurements of Solar Actinic Flux and Atmospheric Photolysis Rates."
October 16-18, 2006 Two members of the AQFL, Ping Liu and Xiaoming Hu, presented research at the 5th Annual CMAS Conference in Chapel Hill, NC. Ping's talk was titled, "Diagnostic Study on Fine Particulate Matter Predictions of CMAQ in the Southeastern U.S." Xiaoming's presentation was titled, "Evaluation and Improvement of Gas/Particle Mass Transfer Treatments for Three-Dimensional Aerosol Simulation and Forecast." September 18, 2006 Dr. Sharon Zhong from Michigan State University visited N.C. State and the Air Quality Forecasting Lab. Dr. Zhong gave a seminar titled, "The Impact of Wildland Grass Fire on the Atmospheric Environment."
August 17, 2006 Dr. Zhang organized a tour to the aerosol wind tunnel newly built at the U.S. EPA. Dr. Baumgardner from UNAM, Eight graduate students from NCSU including seven AQFL members, and several NCSU faculty joined the tour.
August 16-17, 2006

Dr. Darrel Baumgardner, a recognized Professor at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, visited AQFL and EPA on August 16-17 to explore potential collaboration with Dr. Zhang and her AQFL. Several students in AQFL including Ping Liu, Ashley Queen, Chris Misenis, Xiaoming Hu, Srinath Krishnan, and Kai Wang gave a brief presentation on their research.

May 2006 - August 2006 Two Air Quality Forecasting Lab members, Jianlin Hu and Kai Wang, both completed Summer internships at Atmospheric and Environmental Research, Inc. and the EPA, respectively. Jianlin gave a seminar outlining the highlights of his research to the lab. Kai plans to continue his work at the EPA through the upcoming semester.
August 15, 2006

Five abstracts were submitted for presentation at the Ninth Conference on Atmospheric Chemistry, the 87th AMS Annual Meeting, Jan. 14-18, 2007, San Antonio, Texas. The first authors include Ping Liu, Ashley Queen, Chris Misenis, Jian-Ping Huang, and Yang Zhang.

July 7-August 1, 2006 Dr. Zhang visited China and Japan to give 5 invited seminars at the top universities/research organizations ( Tsinghua University, Peking University, the University of Toyko, Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences). A news regarding Dr. Zhang’s seminar at the Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences can be found at http://www.lapc.ac.cn/chinese/news/news/2006/07-17.htm. During her visit, Dr. Zhang met colleagues from those organizations to discuss future collaboration. She represented NCSU to initiate a formal collaboration at the university level with Tsinghua and Peking Universities. She also gave an oral presentation at the 2006 Western Pacific Geophysics Meeting, 24-27 July 2006, Beijing, China. July 10, 2006

All six abstracts submitted for presentation at the CMAS 2006 workshop have been accepted as either oral or poster presentations. The first authors include Ping Liu, Xiaoming Hu, Kai Wang, Jian-Ping Huang, and Yang Zhang. Jian-Lin Hu is the second author in an abstract submitted by an AQFL's collaborator at AER, Inc.

June, 2006 Several AQFL members attended the Workshop on Agricultural Air Quality in Potomac, Maryland near Washington, DC on June 5-8, 2006. One oral presentation and four posters from AQFL were presented at the workshop. View Photos.
June, 2006 Dr. Jianping Huang will gave an oral presentation at the 7th WRF Users' Workshop in Boulder, Colorado on 19 - 22 June 2006. He implemented CB05 gas-phase mechanism in WRF/Chem recently. Dr. Huang will also visit NOAA as a visiting scholar from 26-30 June 2006.

10 AQFL members attended AMS’s Picnic at Pullen Park.  All members enjoyed meeting AMS student members and a few faculty members. Nice sunshine, foods, drinks, and activities. We also had our first outdoor group meeting there. View Photos.

April 28, 2006 Dr. C. Russell Philbrick, Professor of Penn State University, gave a departmental seminar to discuss measurement data available for modeling.  Prof. Philbrick is on sabbatical at NCSU during Spring 2006.  He has attended AQFL seminar series and provided valuable critical reviews and advices to us during his stay at NCSU. April 18, 2006 Chris Misenis was presented with the North Carolina State University Outstanding Teaching Assistant Award at a luncheon Tuesday. He is one of 87 students to receive this honor for the 2005-2006 academic year.
April 15-21, 2006

Dr. Jiming Hao, Professor and Dean of the Institute of Environmental Science and Engineering, Tsinghua University, China, a prestigious member of Chinese Academy of Engineering, visited and gave a seminar at NCSU and U.S. EPA. During his visit, he discussed potential areas of collaborations between Tsinghua and NCSU with Dean Solomon and Dr. Zhang. View Photos.

April 12, 2006 Four graduate students in AQFL, Ashley Queen, Srinath Krishnan, Jianlin Hu, and
Kai Wang, won travel awards to attend the upcoming Workshop on Agricultural Air Quality: State of the Science, June 5-8, 2006, Potomac, MD.
March 29, 2006 Ping Liu, a PhD student in AQFL, also the Vice President of the A&WMA student chapter at NCSU, won the prestigious Air & Waste Management Association Scholarship for the 2006-2007 academic year. She is 1 of the 11 winners in chosen by the A&WMA Scholarship Awards Committee among applicants from all universities in North America. The 11 awards were made to full-time graduate students who are pursuing courses of study and research leading to careers in air quality, waste management, and/or environmental management/policy/law.  Ping is one of the five winners in the area of air quality this year, also one of the first two winners for this Scholarship at NCSU since it was established in 1997.
Feb. 27, 2006 Dr. Jian-Ping Huang, the postdoctoral fellow in AQFL group, has won the best student oral presentation award at the 86th AMS Annual Meeting/the 8th Conference on Atmospheric Chemistry, 27 Jan.–3 Feb., Atlanta, GA.  He made a presentation based on his PhD thesis research at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.  The title of his oral presentation is Regional Transport and Local Chemical Production to Ozone Episodes in Complex Terrain and Coastal Region.  Three student presentations (two oral and one poster) were selected for such awards from a total of 17 oral and poster presentations made by student first-authors in all sessions sponsored or co-sponsored by the AMS Atmospheric Chemistry Committee at this year's annual meeting.
Feb. 27, 2006 Chris Misenis, a MS student in AQFL, won the travel award to attend the 86th AMS Annual Meeting, 27 Jan.–3 Feb., Atlanta, GA.  Chris presented a poster paper entitled Sensitivity of WRF/Chem Predictions to Meteorological Schemes. Three students travel awards were made by the AMS Atmospheric Chemistry Committee this year.
Jan. 29-Feb. 2, 2006 Dr. Zhang, Dr. Huang, Ashely, Chris, Srinath, and Xiaoming attended the 86th AMS meeting in Atlanta. Drs. Zhang and Huang, Srinath, Xiaoming gave oral presentations on the appication and evaluation of CMAQ, PATH, MM5, and WRF/Chem-MADRID on Texas, North Carolina, Hong Kong, and the contiguous U.S. Chris was very popular at the poster presentation session during which he presented an intercomparison of two PBL schemes and two land-surface modules within WRF/Chem. We also have an opportunity to meet and interact with top norch experts in the field of Air Quality/Meteorology from Universities, Governmental research laboratories, and private companies, in addition to touring several local landmarks such as the World's largest Aquarium. Feb. 1, 2006 Ashley Queen, a MS student in AQFL, won the prestigious National Science Foundation Division of Atmospheric Sciences Graduate Fellowship.  She is one of the 16 winners for 2005-2006 AMS/Industry/Government Graduate Fellowships. An award ceremony was held on Feb. 1, 2006 at the AMS meeting.
Dec. 20, 2005 Dr. Zhang, Jianping, Kai, Naga, Xiaoming visited Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). We had productive meetings with Ken Schere, Chief, Atmospheric Model Development Branch, and several staff in the Atmospheric Modeling Division, NOAA and discussed the future collaboration. Nov. 17, 2005 Dr. Zhang visited the University of Iowa where she received her PhD degree in 1994 and gave an invited seminar entitled
Modeling Atmospheric Aerosols: Current Challenges and Future.  She also discussed future collaborations with several faculty members at Purdue University including Drs. Carmichael and Stanier.
Nov. 16, 2005 Dr. Zhang visited Purdue University and gave an invited seminar entitled Recent Advances in Urban/egional Air Quality Modeling.  She also discussed future collaborations with several faculty members at Purdue University including Drs. Niyogi and Harshvardhan.
Oct. 26, 2005 At the invitation of Kaishan Zhang, President of the A&WPA student local chapter at NCSU, Dr. Zhang gave a seminar entitled Air Quality Modeling: History, Current Status, and Future Opportunities.
Oct. 26, 2005 Ping Liu of AQFL has been elected as Vice President of the A&WPA student local chapter at NCSU.
Oct. 26, 2005 Ping Liu and Xiaoming Hu joined the local chapter of Phi Kappa Phi at NCSU by invitation. Phi Kappa Phi is one of the nation's oldest, largest, and most selective all-discipline honor society.
Oct. 18, 2005 Dr. Zhang gave the following oral presentation at the 24th Annual Meeting of American Association for Aerosol Research, October 17-21, 2005, Austin, Texas.

Oct. 14, 2005 A total of seven papers were submitted from AQFL for presentation at the Workshop on Agricultural Air Quality: State of the Science, June 5-8, 2006, Potomac, MD. The student first-authors include Srinath Krishnan, Jianlin Hu, Ashley Queen, and Kai Wang.
Oct. 3, 2005 Dr. Zhang hosted the departmental seminar given by Dr. Jacobson of Stanford University on Oct. 3. Dr. Jacobson is the authors for two textbooks used in four courses in MEAS. All members of AQFL had lunch together with Dr. Jacobson at Ten Ten (a well known restaurant near the campus).
Sept. 26-28, 2005 Dr. Zhang gave two oral presentations at the 4th Annual CMAS Models-3 User's Conference in Chapel Hill, NC. Ping Liu and Xiaoming Hu presented their research in a poster session. 9 students from AQFL attended the poster session to show their support. All students met scientists from NOAA, EPA, AER, and had a good dinner at the poster reception.
Sept. 23, 2005 Dr. Jianping Huang joined AQFL as a postdoctal fellow on Sept. 23, 2005. He received his PhD dregree from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. Dr. Huang brings his expertise in 3-D meteorology and chemistry modeling into the group.
Sept. 9-11, 2005 Dr. Makoto Koike, an Associate Professor at the University of Tokyo, visited AQFL on Sept. 9-11 to explore potential collaboration with Dr Zhang and her AQFL. Several students in AQFL including Ping Liu, Xiaoming Hu, Srinath Krishnan, and Kai Wang met with Dr. Koike individually to discuss their research. As a followup, a graduate student from Dr. Koike's group will visit AQFL for a 2-month period starting mid. November, 2005.
August 15, 2005
The AQFL visited the U.S. EPA at the Research Triangle Park.  Each student met individually with different EPA members to discuss several aspects of air quality forecasting, as well as thesis topics and other methods of collaboration.  The EPA staff joined the students and Dr. Zhang for lunch at the EPA cafe.

August, 2005 Starting Fall, 2005, five graduate students will join Dr. Zhang in the AQFL for their MS or PhD studies:
Ms. Ashley Queen - a MS student who won an AMS fellowship award for 2005 (checked with her for more details).
Mr. Chris Misenis - a MS student who worked as an undergradue RA in AQFL, summer, 2004 and 2005.
Mr. Srinath Krishnan - a MS student who holds a B.S. in computer sciences and wishes to apply his computer skills in atmospheric sciences.
Mr. Jianlin Hu - a PhD candidate who received his B.S. and M.S. degrees on Environmental Sciences from Beijing University, P.R. China.
Mr. Kai Wang - a PhD candidate who received his B.S. and M.S. degrees on Atmospheric Physics from Beijing University, P.R. China.
August, 2005 Ms. Evelyn Frazier, an undergraduate RA in summer 2005 in AQFL, has been awarded to continue to work as an undergrad. RA during the academic year 2005-2006 under the NSF-Alliances for Graduate Education and the Professoriate (AGEP) program.  She will work in the lab on various air quality projects up to 20 hours per week.

 The Fourth Annual N.C. State Undergraduate Summer Research Symposium was held on Thursday, August 4th from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM in the Jane S. McKimmon Center.  Student poster presentations were slated to begin at 9:45 and end around 1:00 PM.  Approximately 100 students from N.C. State and other institutions made poster presentations on their summer research.  Students presenting from the AQFL include:

July 25 - 29, 2005 Xiaoming Hu attended a 5-day WRF training at the Foothills lab, NCAR, Boulder, Colorado.
July 28,2005 Jianping Huang, a doctoral student at the Department of Mathematics, The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, has accepted the Postdoctoral Researcher position on Air Quality/Atmospheric Chemistry Modeling at AQFL.  He has successfully defensed his thesis and will join our group in Sept.,2005
June 27-30,2005 Dr. Zhang gave an oral presentation on Modeling Atmospheric Aerosols in WRF/CHEM at the 2005 Joint WRF/MM5 User’s Workshop, June, 27-30, Boulder, CO.  During the meeting, she also visited the NOAA-Forecast Systems Laboratory and discussed collaborations between AQFL and NOAA scientists.  
  A new link has been added to the website!  By clicking on AQFL seminar, one will be able to see the upcoming "in lab" presentations to be given.  Scheduled dates are tentative and topics will be updated as they become available.

June 21-24, 2005

Ping Liu gave an oral presentation on modeling Secondary Organic Aerosols(SOA) using CMAQ at the A&WMA's 98th Annual Conference & Exhibition,Minneapolis, MI, June 21-24, 2005.

May 20. A total of six abstracts have been submitted from AQFL to Models 3/CMAQ 2005 workshop to be held September 26-28, 2005, Chapel Hill, NC.
May 15. Two MEAS undergraduate students, Ms. Evelyn Frazier and Mr. Danny Hamilton have been selected to be the 2005 AQF lab summer undergraduate research assistants (see summer undergraduate program). They will work on a variety of research projects during this summer (May 17-August 13).
May 7. Prof. Wenxing Wang from Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences visited AQFL. He and Dr. Zhang discussed potential areas of collaborations.
April 27-29, 2005 Dr. Zhang presented a paper and chaired a technical session on aerosols at the Atmospheric Sciences and Air Quality Conference (ASAAQ2005) in San Francisco, CA.
April, 2005 The Air Quality Forecasting Laboratory at North Carolina State University is looking for undergraduate research assistants for summer, 2005. The advertisement for the position may be found here.

13 Dec. , 2004 Dr. Zhang and all her graduate students visited EPA. Each of us met a few scientists who have the expertise on the research areas that we are working on. We also had lunch together with the branch heads and several scientists in the atmospheric science modeling division at the EPA's cafe.

A wonderful thanksgiving party was hosted by Dr. Zhang in her house. All her Phd students and some other NCSU/EPA/RTI participants including Jerry Davis (MEAS),  Rohit Mathur (EPA), Shaocai Yu (EPA), Allen Zheng (EPA),and Sanjay Natarajan (Research Triangle Institute) attended. photos here

Ping Liu attended a 2-day training class for Community Multiscale Air Quality (CMAQ) Modeling System, Chapel Hill , NC .

13-15 October, 2004 Barada Dash attended a 3-day training class for Sparse Matrix Operator Kernel Emissions system (SMOKE) offered by Community Modeling & Analysis System (CMAS), Chapel Hill, NC. SMOKE is the emission processor for EPA’s Models-3 CMAQ.
4-8 October, 2004

A scientific peer review of the EPA’s air quality model (Models-3/CMAQ) has been recently completed by a selected group of 7 external leading scientists from universities, industry and state governmental agencies in North America at an invitation of the U.S. EPA.  This is the first external review for CMAQ since its first release in 1998.  The review covers five key technical areas including Meteorology, Chemistry-Transport, Aerosol Physics and Chemistry, Numerical Techniques and Algorithms and Policy/Science Issues.  The review results will be used to guide the development of CMAQ in the short term, and to assess the appropriateness of resources (institutional support, staffing, and operational funding) in the long term.  Dr. Zhang was a reviewer on Aerosol Physics and Chemistry.  A final review report can be found here

14 September 2004 Drs. Zhang and Aneja hosted a welcome lunch party on Friday, Sept. 3 in an effort to welcome new graduate students on air quality and to promote a close interaction among air quality students in several groups.  Participants included 3 MEAS faculty members, 3 scientists from BAMS, 14 graduate students and 3 undergraduate students.  Here are a few photos from the party

28 June 2004 Dr. Zhang attended The 97th A&WMA Annual Meeting and Exhibition, June 22-25, 2004 in Indianapolis, IN and presented a paper entitled Evaluation of Probing Tools for Air Quality Models.
14 June 2004 A new course has been established for this Fall 2004.  MEA 593J, an Air Quality Forecasting and Modeling course, will be offered starting this Fall.
