Hotel Information

At a workshop in December 2001, the U.S. EPA’s Office of Air Quality Planning and Standards launched the Intercontinental Transport and Climatic Effects of Air Pollutants (ICAP) project to establish a better scientific foundation and to stimulate broader dialogue among experts for addressing issues related to intercontinental transport of pollutants and its potential impacts on regional climate. Over the past few years, the ICAP project has sponsored the work of a number of leading experts. This fall, EPA is sponsoring a second workshop to review the progress that has been made among the international scientific community and to exchange latest findings since the initiation of the ICAP project in 2001. The Carolina Environmental Program (CEP) of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill will be organizing the workshop.

Further information on ICAP can be found at http://www.cep.unc.edu/aqforecasting/ICAP/index.shtml.

The following focus areas will be addressed through presentations and discussion sessions during the workshop:

  • Global and regional emissions inventories and data processing and meteorological modeling for intercontinental transport modeling studies.
  • Applications and development of global and regional chemistry-transport models to study the global and intercontinental transport of air pollutants, including ozone, PM, and mercury.
  • Applications and development of global chemistry-radiation-climate models to study the linkages of air pollution to regional climate and meteorological patterns.
  • Modeling interface for nesting global chemistry-transport models and regional air quality models.
  • Evaluation of global and regional air quality models using a diverse set of observational data sets.
  • Regional air quality modeling studies over the United States, Asia, and Europe.
  • Simulation of hemispheric and regional air quality for a variety of scenarios addressing future global and regional emissions, air quality, and climate conditions.

The two-day workshop will be held on Thursday, October 21, and Friday, October 22, 2004, in the Friday Center of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The workshop forum will include oral presentations, group discussion, and plenary sessions. The ICAP workshop will directly follow the third annual workshop of the Community Modeling and Analysis System (CMAS) (October 18-20) (http://www.cmascenter.org/2004_workshop/announcement.html).
ICAP workshop registration will be available online. Please take few minutes to register so we can plan adequately for workshop materials.
