This program provides a means of recognition for students in any field who have a curiosity about the materials, structures and processes of the solid earth. Admission to the program requires a grade of C or better in MEA 101 and MEA 110. Successful completion of the program requires a ‘C minus’ or better in at least 15 credit hours of geology or geophysical coursework which must include MEA 101, MEA 110 and two additional laboratory courses.

Requirements

    1. Admission into the program requires a ‘C’ or better in MEA 101 and MEA 110.
    2. Successful completion of the program requires a ‘C minus’ or better in at least 15 credit hours of geology or geophysical coursework which must include MEA 101, MEA 110 and two additional laboratory courses.

Required Courses

    MEA 101
    MEA 110
Two additional MEA courses with laboratories

Suggested Minor Programs in Geology
A Minor program may be selected in a specific area of earth science. Examples of coursework beyond MEA 101 and 110 would include, but would not be limited to the following:

  Engineering/Environmental Geology:
MEA 410
Introduction to Mineralogy & Petrology 4 credits
MEA (CE) 435
Engineering Geology 3 credits
MEA 451
Structural Geology 4 credits
MEA 470
Introduction to Geophysics 3 credits
  Geologic Materials:
MEA 410 Introduction to Mineralogy & Petrology 4 credits
MEA 415(or 417) Geology of Economic Mineral Deposits 3 credits
MEA 440 Igneous and Metamorphic Petrology 4 credits
MEA 450 Introductory Sedimentary Petrology 4 credits

  Earth History and Paleontology:
MEA 202/211 Historical Geology + Lab 3 + 1 credits
MEA 120/121 The Dinosaurian World + Lab 3 + 1 credits
MEA 268 Marine Paleontology 4 credits
MEA 369 Terrestrial Paleontology 4 credits
MEA 384 Paleoecology 3 credits

Admissions and Certification of Minor
In both instances, students should contact Dr. Ron Fodor in 2144 Jordan Hall. Admission into the program requires a ‘C’ or better in MEA 101 and MEA 110. The minor should be completed no later than the semester in which the student expects to graduate from his or her degree program. Paperwork for certification should be completed no later than during the registration period for the student’s final semester at NC State.
