With over one hundred graduate students involved in research projects ranging from the study of nanoplankton through regional scale tectonics, to global scale atmospheric dynamics and climate change, the Department of Marine, Earth and Atmospheric Sciences offers entering graduate students the opportunity participating in one of a wide range of challenging research projects with faculty on the leading edge of research in their areas. With a graduate student to faculty ratio of 3.5 to 1, students can expect individual attention. Significant levels of student support are available in the form of research and teaching assistantships; 90% of this year's 30 new graduate students are receiving such support.

Raleigh, the state capitol, with its moderate temperatures (it does get hot in the summer), has many cultural and athletic events available for the 100,000 college student in the area and is just a few hours away from North Carolina's spectacular ocean beaches as well as the highest mountains in the Appalachians.
